Top Tips For The Aspiring Sports Photographer

Many male photography enthusiasts prefer to take photos of action-packed sports events. Being the male that they are, their interest often lies in photographing people involved in various types of sports. For some, particularly those who were former athletes themselves, this endeavor has become a passion. For others, it becomes an income earning opportunity as they are able to contribute their photos to magazines, travel guides and websites.

But taking photos of athletes or people joining sports events takes patience and some techniques. What counts is you specialize in a certain area and learn your subject matter as best as you can. Gaining experience is the best teacher apart from constant reading from a wide variety of resources.

Professional sports photographer from England, Jordan Weeks, offers his tips on how to improve your skills. this man has been snapping since age 16 and has covered different sports including running, hiking, triathlon, cycling, swimming and surfing.

Get some inspiration. Isn’t it that when one is inspired, he or she gets more creative? the same is true with photography. So find some inspiration before you start shooting or go somewhere else to shoot. this means browsing through magazines and websites and figuring out how photographers have taken their shots. Avoid copying their work because being original in what you do is always best. Aim for your own style and when you know what it is you want, you’ll surely find it easy to snap on your preferred subjects.

Know your camera. Shooting subjects that move fast can be quite challenging. as such, it will be most helpful if you understand your camera very well. Knowing all the settings will make it easy for you to shoot away while the athletes or people are on the move. it will also allow you to do things quickly such as change lenses, shutter speed or aperture. Keep in mind that when you’re taking action scenes, you need to act fast so you won’t miss anything.

Learn the sport. do learn about the sport as well because if you know what goes on, you can prepare well for taking the images. You will be able to predict what will happen next and know when to click the shutter. Jordan Weeks claims he even participates in the sports to get a first-hand experience on the action and the adrenalin. If you can, why not do the same when you have some free time.

Get closer. One of the best tips that photographers often give is to take photos up close. even in sports photography, you can very well do this. Experiment with close up shots and eventually, you will find that your images are worth a second look. Snap on the leg part or the head part because they are the areas where drama can be seen.

Remember these simple steps and you’ll be on your way to becoming a professional sports photographer in the near future. Practice makes perfect so take the time to experiment and learn more about the sports you’re interested in.

Palo Alto Online : Creating memories of home

Home portrait artist Alan VanEss enjoys working in Palo Alto for its wide variety of architectural styles. “There are just so many nice home designs such as Craftsmen, Tudor, Spanish, new England, Eichler and more in Palo Alto,” he said. “When you think about it there are many wonderful designs in the entire Bay Area such as the traditional styles of homes built back in the 1800s, to various Revival and Modernist styles. It’s great to be able to include the finer details of architecture, especially if it is of a specific historical period.” Working from his Redwood City studio, VanEss creates paintings of houses, in a field dominated by photography. He said his portraits serve as a unique memento for those looking to preserve lasting images of their homes. “When people choose to live somewhere, it’s a very personal decision of what kind of house they want to live in. They are really proud of the moment they choose a particular home,” he said. “Besides that, if they ever find themselves at a point in their lives where they have to move, they can remember their previous home through one of my portraits.” his paintings will be on exhibit for the next few months at the Palo Alto office of Realtor Ken DeLeon. “The appeal to me was that his work seems to evoke positive emotions of peoples’ homes.

Annular solar eclipse — a ‘ring of fire’ — visible in Northern California on Sunday

A rare annular solar eclipse will appear in the continental United States on Sunday for the first time since 1994, and Bay Area residents will have a chance to see it in full if they are willing to drive a few hours.

Unlike a spectacular total solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and sun and blocks all but the sun’s corona, Sunday’s annular eclipse will leave a visible “ring of fire” surrounding the moon’s dark silhouette.

In the Bay Area itself, viewers won’t be able to experience the full eclipse, but it will be something close. instead of the moon moving directly in front of the sun, the moon will be slightly off center and the effect will be more of a “C” shape instead of a complete “O,” experts said.

“This is probably the most easily accessible (annular solar eclipse) for people in the Bay Area in their remaining lifetimes. to see the complete ring is rare and they should do it,” Alex Filippenko, a UC astronomy professor, said in urging residents to make the trip to see the eclipse.

Both types of solar eclipses require alignment of the three bodies, but in an annular eclipse the moon is far enough away from Earth that is doesn’t fully obstruct the disk, leaving the slim ring of sunlight.

The event comes two weeks after a “supermoon,” in which the full moon appeared when it was close in orbit to the Earth. Now the new moon is at the far end of the lunar orbit.

The annular solar eclipse begins in Asia, travels across the Pacific Ocean and hits the West Coast near the California-Oregon border and moves southeast through Eureka, Reno, parts of Utah and Arizona, and Albuquerque, N.M., before ending in Lubbock, Texas.

Viewers in a 150-mile-wide swath of the eclipse path — clear skies permitting — should be able to see the full annular effect, where the moon ultimately will cover about 89 percent of the sun, said Paul Doherty, senior scientist at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.

In the Bay Area, the moon will cover about 84 percent of the sun and the ring effect will not fully form.

Here, the moon will pass in front of the sun between 5:16 p.m. and 7:40 p.m., with the peak of the eclipse occurring about 6:33 p.m., Doherty said.

“We’re close enough that we get a good partial eclipse,” he said.

Experts warned that no one should look directly at the sun or a solar eclipse because of the danger of permanent eye damage.

Instead, viewers should get specially made solar eclipse glasses available at science supply stores, some museums or on the Internet.

Viewers also can use no. 14 welders glass, which is hard to find because welders do not need glass that dark. Filippenko said, however, welding supply shops can recommend glass combinations that can be stacked together to allow for the same protection.

Filippenko said it is important that glasses or other material used to view the eclipse specify that it is capable of blocking 99.999 percent of light.

Another easy and inexpensive method to view the celestial event is to create a pinhole viewer by poking a small hole in a piece of cardboard; something the size of a box side will work. A hole poked by a pencil or pen should be enough to project an image of the eclipse on a surface behind it. Doherty suggested a white surface placed about 6 feet behind the cardboard.

Clouds or fog could ruin the chance to witness the event, but conditions appear to be shaping up well.

“It should be good, but no guarantees,” said Suzanne Sims, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

The marine layer has been burning off by afternoon, especially in Contra Costa County. Areas closer to the coast could have fog, but that will depend mostly on how much fog develops in the morning, Sims said.

Next up on the celestial calendar: a June 4 lunar eclipse followed the next day by a rare “Transit of Venus,” in which Venus passes before the sun. that event won’t be visible again on Earth for more than 100 years.

  • Parking is limited. If you use Muni 76, the last trip is at 6:30 p.m.

    Safely view the eclipse

  • Art appreciation

Parked in front of Bud Rickert’s Art Center is a green 1950 Plymouth, emblazoned with the message, “Serving the creative since this car was new.”

Technically, it was 1952 when former Walt Disney Studio artists Yvonne and Hubert “Bud” Rickert founded the business at 1156 N. E St., in San Bernardino, which grew into two locations.

Their daughter, Sandra, ran the Riverside location from 1975 through 2006 when she retired.

Their son, Doug, now runs the San Bernardino store, which in 1981 moved to its current location, a stone’s throw from the original.

After 60 years, Rickert’s is a landmark on E Street, just north of downtown.

“I’m a very lucky person. I’ve only had one job, I had great parents and a good fundamental retail business background and still have been able to survive the atrocious economy,” Rickert said.

“Art interest and usage is about 2 to 3 percent of the population – we’re highly specialized, highly niched because people don’t do as much artwork as they used to because they are busy with computers and abstract kinds of things.”

A certified framer since the ’70s, Rickert offers everything art related. Custom frames and mats, paints, pastels, watercolor, canvas, pens, brushes, easels, palettes, panels, adhesives, knives and clay.

You name it, Rickert’s has it packed into their 3,000-square-foot space.

Even automotive airbrush, goldleaf and pinstripe kits for car buffs.

Rickert, 64, an artist like his parents, specializes in restoration work on old or damaged artwork.

He found a long time ago that restoration work is gratifying – cleaning and restoring pieces for the Orange show collection, museums, libraries, institutions and private individuals.

The shop also showcases some of Rickert’s many collections: antique wood-framed arcade games; antique toys including the original Transformers; a huge picture tag collection; a sports-based card collection of athletes who’ve been suspended, incarcerated or thrown out of the sport they were in. Rickert calls it his Hall of Shame.

There is a collection of local artists’ work.

The vintage bicycle hanging from the ceiling was entered in the recent Redlands Bicycle Classic and is representative of Rickert’s extensive bicycle collection.

“I am a perpetual collector,” he says.

A large, lighted green neon sign from the original store covers one wall and proclaims, “Bud Rickerts.”

Rickert’s has three employees, including Ken Gard, who’s been with the company 37 years.

The bad economy is working somewhat in the store’s favor. Major competitors are not carrying unusual items anymore like Rickert’s does. they are dropping items such as stretcher bars, leaving the San Bernardino art supply store to pick up the extra business.

“We’re glad to do it,” he said.

UPDATED: Long Beach USPS processing plant to shut by February

The U.S. Postal Service will begin the process of shutting down its processing and distribution plant in Long Beach next year, a move that will affect 686 workers.

Long Beach’s processing and distribution hub at 2300 Redondo Ave. will be part of the first wave of 140 consolidations that will begin in the summer and continue through February 2013.

Unable to wait for a deadlocked Congress for help, the nearly bankrupt U.S. Postal Service announced Thursday that it will proceed with a three-phase plan to consolidate its 461 mail processing locations across the country.

About 5,000 employees will be notified as early as next week about the consolidations, which will mostly involve transferring mail-processing operations from smaller to larger facilities.

The remaining 89 consolidations are set to start in February 2014.

“We simply do not have the mail volumes to justify the size and capacity of our current mail processing network. to return to long-term profitability and financial stability while keeping mail affordable, we must match our network to the anticipated workload,” Patrick R. Donahoe, Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the Postal Service, said in a written statement. “Given that the Postal Service is currently projecting a $14 billion net loss in FY2012, and continuing annual losses of this magnitude, we simply cannot justify maintaining our current mail processing footprint.”

The consolidations are expected to reduce postal staff by 13,000 and save the struggling postal agency roughly $1.2 billion annually once they are fully implemented.

The USPS first announced its plans to shut down its Long Beach mail processing facility and fold operations into its Los Angeles center back in February, but was held off pending action by Congress. now, with Thursday’s announcement, the Long Beach merger to L.A. will begin sometime in January, said USPS spokesman Rich Maher.

Maher stressed that the Long Beach building will remain as a retail facility for customers who want to buy stamps, ship packages and have P.O. boxes.

As for the fate of the 686 mail processing workers in Long Beach, the USPS is negotiating with its unions on retirement incentives.

“More than half our workers are eligible to retire today,” Maher said. “Our goal is to not lay off workers.”

Thursday’s announcement comes after vociferous protests from communities across the U.S., particularly those in rural areas, over the mail agency’s initial multibillion dollar cost-cutting plan to close up to 3,700 post offices and 252 mail processing centers. The Postal Service last week backed off on closing post offices, saying it would cut costs instead by reducing operating hours.

Thursday’s announcement seeks to allay some rural concerns about immediate, broad-scale cuts to mail processing centers that would have slowed first-class mail delivery of prescription drugs, newspapers and other services beginning this summer and would have virtually eliminated the chance for a stamped letter to arrive the next day.

Under the new plan, about 80 percent of the U.S. areas that currently enjoy overnight first-class mail delivery will continue to do so through the end of next year. After that, barring congressional action, the Postal Service will proceed with additional steps that could slow first-class mail and reduce overnight delivery even further, said Megan Brennan, chief operating officer of the Postal Service.

The Postal Service has been grappling with losses as first-class mail volume declines and more people switch to the Internet to communicate and pay bills. The agency has forecast a record $14.1 billion loss by the end of this year. Without changes, it said, annual losses would exceed $21 billion by 2016.

Donahoe stressed that even with its latest moves, the agency still faces mounting losses without congressional action that would give it more leeway to eliminate Saturday mail delivery and reduce health and labor costs.

If the House fails to act soon, postal officials say they will face a cash crunch in August and September, when the agency must pay more than $11 billion to the Treasury for future retiree health benefits. Already $13 billion in debt, the health payment obligation will force the agency to run up against its $15 billion debt ceiling, causing it to default on the payments.

Lucasfilm to work with Marin Community Foundation on affordable housing at Grady Ranch

The Marin Community Foundation, backed by Lucasfilm, will study options for developing affordable housing at Grady Ranch.

Foundation CEO Thomas Peters said the foundation will bring in affordable housing developers to review numerous land use, geologic, watershed, traffic and related studies completed by Lucasfilm, which aborted plans for a huge film studio after neighbors complained about a project obscured from view but not far from their backyards.

Lucas, who expressed an interest in selling the land to affordable housing developers when he pulled the plug, “is thrilled to be working with the foundation,” said Lynn Hale, Lucasfilm spokeswoman.

Liz Dale, president of the Lucas Valley Estates Homeowners Association, shrugged off the latest development in the Grady Ranch saga, saying, “Our comment is no comment.”

“That’s their own thing and we wouldn’t have any comment on it. … It’s their property,” Dale added.

Brian Crawford, head of the county’s Community Development Agency, noted that housing is not a new idea.

“Before the Lucasfilm proposal for Grady Ranch, the site and the adjacent community have long been planned for housing by the county’s land use regulations,” Crawford said. “If affordable housing is eventually included in a future development proposal, it would help us meet our housing goals.”

Peters said the foundation is pleased that “George Lucas is seeing this as an opportunity to address one of the most critical issues in Marin County — making it possible for a broad range of individuals and families to afford to live in Marin.

“In many instances, this is housing for people who work in the county but can’t afford to live here and for people who grew up here but who now cannot afford safe, secure housing in their home county,” he said. “And we have always paid particular attention to the need for affordable housing by the county’s expanding senior population.”

Peters added: “We’re excited about the possibility of creating family and/or senior affordable housing on Grady Ranch, and we’re enormously grateful to Mr. Lucas and Lucasfilm for the opportunity to explore it.”

Peters said Lucas has agreed to hand over studies and other data accumulated in his nearly two-decade quest to build film facilities on the site.

A film project was approved by the county in 1996, but when Lucas decided to proceed years later, he scaled it down by consolidating buildings and sought new permits. Neighbors who said they were unaware of the 16-year-old plan issued numerous complaints and hired a lawyer who advised officials a lawsuit was possible and that state regulatory agencies had concerns about a $70 million watershed improvement program. Lucas bailed out, saying he could not afford more delay, and indicated a desire to sell the ranch to housing developers.

Hale, the Lucasfilm spokeswoman, embraced the foundation plan.

“We are delighted that a prestigious organization such as the Marin Community Foundation is looking into the possibility of working with developers for Grady Ranch,” she said. “The foundation has had a solid track record for over 25 years of helping in the development, rehabilitation and restoration of over 2,600 affordable homes in Marin.”

Peters stressed the foundation wants to study all housing options available. no price for the land has been discussed, he added.

“Lucasfilm has some suggestions about how they would develop the land,” Peters said. “They will make that available and we will bring in affordable housing developers to study it all.

“We’re going to test it out.”

Tips How To Take Your Own Pregnancy Newborn and Family Photos – Shoot Your Own Damn Baby

Having a baby is a wonderful and happy time for every woman and it’s definitely worth capturing it for long memory of you and your off-springs. But should you really pay for the pregnancy and newborn photos or perhaps your friend/cousin or hubby could do it with a few tricks and a camera from best buy?? here are a few of things you’ll need:

    • Your artistic expectation
    • Your patience
    • Your determination to read till the end of this article

This is obvious but you should decide on what kind of pictures you would like to have as some are pretty easy to pull off and some take quite a bit of skill, special lighting and equipment. I would suggest to Google things like artistic pregnancy photos or best newborn photographers and check out the photos you find to be most appealing. Some things you could easily copy with your own point and shoot camera Here are the tips on how to take good pregnancy photos on a budget:

    1. JUST SHOOT IT. If shooting at home try to use a camera on a Portrait mode (or Manual if you are more technically inclined and your camera allows it) and without on-camera flash. Just play with available table lamps or window lights. you may drape a black or any other solid fabric in the back to focus more on you then your interior. Ask your friend or husband to take close up shots of you, your belly. Play with props, such as memorabilia that will belong to your kid, cute items, flowers – be creative
    2. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. Go out – beach, park or an interesting dramatic location does half the job of creating an image,
    3. LIGHT. take pictures at sunset time – that’s when the lights are best of all.
    4. LOOSE THE CLOTHES. If weather and your self confidence permit, try to loose the clothes – use fabric wraps and simple button up shirts or light dresses to accentuate your belly (and perhaps hide some unwanted spots:)).
    5. PHOTOSHOP IT. when you are all done and happy with the results, I would recommend to do some editing on a few of your favorite pictures. But BE CAREFUL not to overdo it – a little bit of Photoshop is great to remove unwanted things, like: blemishes, stretch marks, dark circles under your eyes, and convert photos into nice black and whites. however, a lot of airbrushing and over-processing can ruin any image by making it look look soapy and fake. Most malls have inexpensive photo-editing services that would do basic editing for around $15 a photo. I would recommend to shop around and find people who do very natural looking photo editing with examples of the look that you’d want to go for. This step is critical, as nowadays good Photoshop work separates snap-shots from professional looking photos.
    6. PRINT IT FOR LONG YEARS TO COME. Try to print your photos on the best possible papers and inks. Although this can get expensive it will pay off in a long run by staying vibrant for many decades (some claim that certain types of canvas images can keep their colors for centuries) – that’s handy if you want to keep your photos for the rest of your life and then give them to your kids and grand-kids. I would recommend searching for archival printing labs. It used to be available mostly to professional photographers and artists but is getting more popular among individuals wishing to preserve their photos. with this said, archival framing is also recommended to finish up your work of art.

    SO WHAT ABOUT BABY PHOTOS?

Not to worry, you can do it, too. of course professional photographers who specialize in newborn and baby photos are always the first choice in this case, because they have all the props, best photography gear and lenses that create that soft looking background which makes all the difference in the world and also because they simply know what they are doing. But it’s not always the case with inexperienced photographers and the pros are always more expensive. thus, in some cases you can take just as good of pictures with your own camera at home then taking it to another cheesy photographer.

    Things you’ll need:

    1. A BABY;) AND PLENTY OF PATIENCE. Babies are best to be photographed on the first week of their life because they sleep a lot and are easy to pose without waking them up. The 6th day of life is considered to be perfect but the first 2-3 weeks will work as well. after that it’s gonna get harder and harder to keep them asleep – but on the other hand it’s YOUR baby, you’ll have all the time to take pictures of it.
    2. MAKE IT SIMPLE. take that diaper OFF Some people like to put a lot of props and distracting elements into baby photos. I say keep it about the baby. unless you are the next Anne Geddes I doubt you can pull off a good photo of your baby hanging off a tree branch looking serene (that’s difficult and dangerous too). use fabrics and earthy tones. Experiment with locations, put the baby into baskets and cute things. take that ugly diaper off use the props and poses to shoot implied nudes of your little one – they always look more artsy.
    3. MAKE IT SAFE you are not Anne Geddes... It’s THE most important part of the process. you should make sure that whatever you do your most precious possession doesn’t get harmed in the process. Crank up the heat, make sure the baby is comfy and laying on surfaces that won’t scratch or get into eyes, nose etc. Don’t put babies on edges or try to duplicate those cool shots where they are handing off things – that’s Photoshop. No photographer in the right mind would put their clients’ baby in jeopardy so most of the images are composites (where the baby is laying in the stork and then Photoshopped into another stork hanging off a branch or whatnot otherwise the Photographer is either taking every precaution or taking a risk). If you do try to shoot stork images I suggest to practice common sense and have people helping you.
    4. SHOOT UP CLOSE. Come and take images from different angles other then side images of your laying on a side baby – although it may look adorable to you, in all reality that’s boring. Experiment, try to be creative. Shoot those little toes and fingers, hair line and butt. also you may put a baby on your husband’s shoulder and take a photo from the back, or put the baby’s head into his hands and capture how small the baby is in comparison with large adult hands. I’m sure you get the point.
    5. PHOTOSHOP. PRINT. HANG. POST. I have the same exact suggestions as the aforementioned editing and printing methods.
